Thursday 12th June, 6pm

Award-winning author Lamorna Ash discusses her new book with fellow writer, Charlotte Hobson.

Ash is the author of the acclaimed Dark, Salt, Clear, which described life in Newlyn with powerful intelligence and lyricism. It shortlisted for the Wainwright Nature Writing Prize in 2020, won the Somerset Maugham Award in 2021, and was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. Ash lives in London and writes for the The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph and the New Statesman. She traces her Cornish connections back through her mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

In her latest book, Don't Forget We're Here Forever: A New Generation's Search for Religion, she examines our universal need for nourishment of the soul. Following the conversion of two friends, Ash is intrigued to discover that in the midst of disconnection and apathy, religion seems to be speaking to a new generation. She embarks on a journey across Britain - from Evangelical youth festivals to Quaker meetings, silent Jesuit retreats and monastic communities - to investigate what is driving young people today to embrace Christianity.

Praise for Don't Forget We're Here Forever: 'Spellbinding. An incredible exploration of how young people are navigating the complex world we find ourselves in today' Katy Hessel, author of The Story of Art without Men.

·       Do you find it tricky to express yourself in writing?

·       Do you find essays difficult or overwhelming?

·       Would you like help in organising your thoughts and developing critical thinking?

Join Anna Wilson, a published author and Royal Literary Fund Fellow to explore how to develop your writing skills. Whether you are thinking of going on to college, university, an apprenticeship or going straight into the world of work, you will benefit from this workshop.

Anna lives in Penzance. She has over twenty years’ experience in running workshops and teaching at school and university. She has also published 60 books for adults and children.

Up until now the Royal Literary Fund workshops have only been available to schools, but Anna has recently received funding to run a workshop here at Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery for homeschooled young people.

The workshop is divided into four hour-long sessions. We start by discussing what writing is for and what different writing styles look like. We move on to exploring what critical thinking means, how to argue our point of view and how to edit and structure our writing.

The sessions are highly interactive and designed to demystify the writing process. Anna will share approaches and techniques to encourage you to feel that writing is not a hurdle but an opportunity.

Dark Cornwall Takeover Dark Cornwall Takeover Dark Cornwall Takeover

Saturday 16th August - 6-9pm at Cornwall Museum & Art Gallery

For one unforgettable evening, Cornwall Museum & Art Gallery opens its doors to the otherworld.

Dark Cornwall invites you on an immersive, interactive journey through four powerful themes - Culture, History, Folklore, and Art - brought vividly to life across the museum’s atmospheric halls.

Wander freely. Choose your path. Guests are welcome to devote their time to one or two chapters, sample a little of each, or simply lose themselves in the grandeur of the museum and the haunting beauty of The International Dark Folklore Exhibition.

CULTURE – Gather for an intimate discussion led by a special guest on ancient Cornish customs and dances, exploring their meaning, symbolism, and an uncertain future.

HISTORY – Join us in the museum’s main hall for a guided encounter with Cornwall’s most intriguing artefacts - from the capstone of Tregiffian Barrow to the Artognou Stone, the Towednack Hoard, and the exquisite Gold Lunula of St Merryn.

FOLKLORE – In the newly refurbished Nature Gallery, a master droll teller brings the legends of Cornwall to life - giants, piskies, dragons, spriggans, Morvoren, and King Arthur himself, surrounded by creatures of land, sea, and sky.

ART – In partnership with Vincent Gothe and Gothe Residency of the Arts, Dark Cornwall, co-hosts The International Dark Folklore Exhibition - a global celebration of myth, memory, and imagination through the work of our collective creative communities. This exhibition stands as a powerful reminder that in an age of automation, human creativity, rooted in experience and emotion, remains vital and irreplaceable.

Tickets are just £6. Raise a glass (alcohol available for purchase), share in the stories, and let the shadows guide you.
